Sacro Monte di Crea

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sacro Monte di Crea belongs to the Italian Sacri Monti ("holy mountains"). The chapels on the hills of Monferrat , originally dedicated to depictions of the life of Our Lady , are arranged on a devotional path that starts in front of the church and reaches its destination in the Paradise Chapel.

The Sacro Monte di Crea was built from 1589 at the instigation of the Franciscan Costantino Massino on the site of a sanctuary, in which the Virgin Mary was venerated since early Christian times; the establishment of that place of pilgrimage is in the tradition of St. Attributed to Eusebius von Vercelli , from whom the statue of the Virgin Mary is said to come from, which is located on the Sacro Monte di Crea. The chapels were structurally changed several times and in 1820 they were fundamentally restored after being partially destroyed.
