The Sacri Monti ( Sacred Mountains ) in Piedmont and Lombardy are nine extensive chapels and other pilgrimage sites that were built on mountains and lakes in the late 16th and 17th centuries and each dedicated to certain aspects of the Christian faith. In addition to their symbolic and spiritual significance, they are of great beauty and well adapted to the landscape. They contain numerous works of art, such as paintings and sculptures. The Sacri Monti have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Northern Italy since 2003 .
