Santa Maria Addolorato on the Sacro Monte di Brissago

The Sacro Monte di Brissago is a pilgrimage site in the canton of Ticino . The facility belongs to the so-called Sacri Monti ("holy mountains") and is located about 500 m southwest of the town center on the little road from Incella to Porta in the Valle del Sacro Monte, which is named after him.

history

The Sacro Monte was built on the model of the Sacro Monte di Varese and mainly with funds from Antonio Francesco Branca (1714–1778), who had come to fortune as a merchant in St. Petersburg and Livorno and was therefore called "Muscovite".

The main building of the complex is the chapel of Santa Maria Addolorata, which was built on a ledge in 1767 with the inclusion of an older chapel from 1709, which in turn replaced an earlier chapel by Girolamo Tirinanzi. Santa Maria Addolorata is a central late Baroque building with a barrel vault , almost circular quatrefoil windows and Ionic pilasters , a square choir and an octagonal drum dome , a Tuscan-style porch and a turret with a curved dome in the southeast corner of the choir. The high altar is made of polychrome marble from around 1773. Behind it there is a Mater Dolorosa in a glazed niche . The church is frescoed with St. Petrus and Paulus decorated by Giuseppe Antonio Felice Orelli (1706–1776). On the walls there are four large frescoes depicting the stigmatization of St. Francis , the vision of St. Anthony of Padua , the Blessed Mother with her parents and St. Show Rosa of Lima .

The rococo stucco work comes from Visetti from Valsolda. It is followed by a three-storey beneficiary building. In the open Calvary Chapel from 1767 there is a crucifixion group by Domenico Gelosa, behind which there used to be a fresco of Jerusalem.

The ascent to Sacro Monte is formed by a way of the cross that begins on Via Gerusalemme on the eastern outskirts of Brissago. The chapels of the Stations of the Cross are painted with frescoes by Fra Roberto from 2000, earlier frescoes by Giovanni Antonio Felice Orelli. Part of the complex is the octagonal Chapel dei Giudei ("Chapel of the Jews") with a vestibule and a small tower. In the chapel there is a scourge column made of terracotta from around 1774. From 1975 to 2000 the Way of the Cross was restored under the direction of the architect Luigi Snozzi.
