In the context maps the extending cartographic representation over the entire card mirror and is of a rectangular or trapezoidal confined card frame. In contrast to this, the representation of an island map is limited to a defined area of ​​terrain (e.g. a federal state) without including the spatial surroundings.

In official maps in particular, the map field is defined by geographic coordinates or the grid lines of a national coordinate system. The sheet cutting system results in the shape and area of ​​the rectangular single sheets. In doing so, mapped elements are cut up at the edge of the map, but the sheets can be joined together seamlessly.
