Rahva Haäl

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rahva Hääl (in German Volksstimme ) was the country's most important communist daily during the Soviet occupation of Estonia (1940/41 and 1944–1991) . It was the official Estonian-language party bulletin of the Communist Party of Estonia (EKP) and the public announcement organ of the government of the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic .

history

On 16./17. June 1940 the Red Army occupied the Republic of Estonia. The co-ordination of the Estonian press followed immediately. The new communist rulers replaced the newspaper Uus Eesti ("New Estonia") with Rahva Hääl on June 22, 1940 . A few weeks later, following sham elections , the state was renamed the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic and part of the Soviet Union. During the time of the German occupation of Estonia, the Estonian-language newspaper appeared in the Soviet Union .

Rahva Hääl was during the entire period of the Estonian SSR , the press organ of EKP, propaganda sheet and Leitzeitung for political life in the Estonian SSR. In 1990 the sheet had a circulation of 197,100 daily copies, which decreased to 24,304 by the time it was discontinued.

With the collapse of the Soviet Union and the regaining of Estonian independence, Rahva Hääl was privatized. The newspaper was published until 1995. By merging the papers Rahva Hääl , Hommikuleht and Päevaleht , Eesti Päevaleht was created on June 5, 1995 , which is now the second largest political daily in Estonia after Postimees .
