Rahvaleht

Rahvaleht ("Volksblatt") was a newspaper in Estonia during the interwar period .

The first edition of Rahvaleht appeared on September 5, 1923. The editorial office was located in the Estonian capital Tallinn . Until 1938 the newspaper appeared two to three times a week.

From 1931 in particular, Rahvaleht was also known for its high-quality side dishes and additions. Numerous short stories and novels appeared in the newspaper publisher's program. Often it was translations of foreign literature that were brought closer to the Estonian reader.

From 1938

1938 Rahvaleht were merged with the Estonian daily newspaper Vaba Maa . Vaba Maa was discontinued on March 4, 1938; From then on, Rahvaleht appeared as a daily newspaper six times a week. With a daily circulation of 40,000 to 45,000 copies, it became one of the most widely read newspapers in the Republic of Estonia, which then had a population of around one million.

Like all print media, Rahvaleht was also restricted in her work from the mid-1930s onwards by the censorship of the press and police authorities. Head of State Konstantin Päts seized power in a bloodless coup in March 1934 and has ruled authoritarian ever since.

The End

With the Soviet occupation of Estonia in the summer of 1940 the newspaper was discontinued. The last edition appeared on September 17, 1940.
