Rainer Jörg Katzenbeisser (born June 2, 1978 in Waidhofen an der Thaya ) is an Austrian strength athlete from the city of Litschau , who has made stone lifting and grip strength as well as the old-time strongman lifestyle his passion. In 2007 he won the title of Austrian national bench press champion in the weight class up to 125 kg. In 2016 he won the title of European bench press champion and the European champion in the squat discipline at the EPC WPF European Championship, which was held in Austria. Katzenbeisser took part in the "World Powerlifting Championships" of the EPC WPF in Holland in 2017 and was able to win the world championship in all three disciplines, the bench press, the squat and the deadlift.

Athletic career

Katzenbeisser began his athletic career in the field of martial arts , especially karate . From there he switched to weight training. In 2005 Katzenbeisser won the Viennese state championship of the Austrian Association for Powerlifting (ÖVK) in bench press in the class up to 125 kg and not only won 1st place in the individual ranking, but also in the team ranking. In 2007 Katzenbeisser secured the Austrian national title in bench press at the national championship of the WPC in the weight class up to 125 kg. Katzenbeisser only competed in bench press competitions in addition to normal strength training without any special preparation. He did not practice his true passion until later, stone lifting, i.e. lifting mostly ancient natural stones and training his grip strength . In 2016 Katzenbeisser took part in the EPC WPF European Championship in bench press and squat and was able to secure the European title in the bench press and squat disciplines. In addition, he set a new EPC WPF European record in the squat discipline in the class up to 125 kg. In the following year 2017, Katzenbeisser took part in the "World Powerlifting Championships" of the EPC WPF and secured the world heavyweight title in the bench press, squat and deadlift disciplines.

Apart from the regular sporting competition, Katzenbeisser caused a sensation when he picked up the historic Stones of Dee (total weight 333 kg) in Scotland in 2012 without any aids. He performed this feat several times on April 3 and 4, 2012. Katzenbeisser had to lift the stones in front of an official witness appointed by David P. Webster OSE. Katzenbeisser received a certificate from David P. Webster OSE as confirmation.

In 2013 Katzenbeisser raised the Stones of Dee again, this was also used as a promotion for Metroflex Sports USA. The difference to 2012 was that Katzenbeisser put his 7-year-old son, who weighed 26 kg, on his shoulders before lifting the stones, which corresponded to a total weight of 359 kg.

In 2014 Katzenbeisser performed another show of strength and lifted a weight of 630 kg for a few centimeters from the floor in the "rack lift", which was also used as a promotion by Metroflex Gym Arlington TX (USA).

Other successes and feats of strength that Katzenbeisser achieved over the years are lifting 210 kg with just one hand on a narrow steel ring without any aids such as pulling aids or the like, tearing up card sets "Snap cards" or telephone books or handling heavy handgrippers, Katzenbeisser is also a “Certified Grippermaster” here, as he has made grip strength into his passion alongside stone lifting and the “Oldtime Strongman” lifestyle.

In the magazine MILO of IronMind Vol-21 No. 3 (IronMind Nevada City USA) an article about stone lifting by Rainer Katzenbeisser appeared over two pages including the complete training program of the Austrian.

In 2015 Katzenbeisser was featured in the book "Steinoben" (Volume 1). immortalized by the strength sports historian and author Thorsten Moser. Here his feats of strength in stone lifting were described by the author as world class. This book also contains the training program Katzenbeisser used to prepare for stone lifting.
