The Ramburs blue arrow ( Orthetrum ramburi ) is a dragonfly of the family of the sail dragonflies (Libellulidae). It bears the name of the 19th century French entomologist Rambur .

features

The dragonflies have a wingspan of 5.5 to 6.5 centimeters. The females of this dragonfly species have a brown abdomen and the males a bright blue abdomen. The animals are easy to confuse with other Orthetrum species, especially the Little Blue Arrow ( Orthetrum coerulescens ) can only be distinguished by genital examinations . It is therefore questionable whether Ramburs blue arrow is actually a species of its own or a subspecies of the small blue arrow.

Way of life and distribution

Rambur's blue arrow behaves similarly to the other types of blue arrows. The males fly in rapid flight near bodies of water to defend their territories. But to rest, they always return to the same seat. They fly from June to September. The females lay their eggs under the guard of the males. Nothing is known about the development of the larvae .

They occur in the south of the Mediterranean countries , in North Africa , Turkey and east to India . They are not demanding, but prefer running water.
