Ramerturm
The Ramerturm ( Latvian Rāmera tornis ) is a tower of the historic Riga city fortifications of the Latvian capital Riga .
location
It is located on the north side of Riga's old town. South of the tower runs the noise street (Latvian Trokšņu iela), north of the tower street (Torņa iela).
Design and history
The tower was built in the first half of the 13th century on a rectangular floor plan and was open to the south to the city. In the 16th century, the city wall lost its military importance due to the development of weapon technology. Buildings were added on both sides, and the Ramerturm was also built over. When the dilapidated buildings Lärmstrasse 15 and 17 were demolished in 1913, the remains of the Ramerturm were rediscovered. There were still three walls at a height of two stories. Archaeological excavations were carried out in the course of the 20th century. It was found that, due to deficiencies in a wall of the foundation, the lower space of the tower had originally been backfilled to prevent the wall from collapsing. In addition, a horse skull and other animal skulls were found that had been walled up as an offering during the construction of the tower. From 1985 to 1987 the tower was restored and reconstructed.
