The newly built food center contains design elements from the surrounding colonial houses. The color scheme is white, black, and brown. The roof is 7 meters high to ensure adequate ventilation. The 83 shops are arranged around the central square in a horseshoe shape. Dishes such as fish , noodles , satay and seafood are offered .

Flora in the food center

Over 50 types of flowers , including pink frangipani and various types of palm trees , have been planted in the Newton Food Center area.

Controversy

Though it is promoted for Singaporean cuisine by the STB, the grocery vendors at Newton Food Center are often criticized by locals, mostly for overpricing and mediocre food quality. The center is particularly notorious for incessant advertising and harassment of customers by overzealous salespeople.

On March 14, 2009, six American tourists were charged $ 491 Singapore for a meal at Tanglin's Best BBQ Seafood. In this case of blatant inflation, a supervisory authority imposed a three-month ban on the sales booth and banned his assistant from working there for five years.
