Rammu (German Rammo , Swedish Ramö ) is an Estonian island in the Baltic Sea , located in the Gulf of Finland .
description
Rammu is administratively part of Jõelähtme Township in Harju County . The size of the island is 1.0256 km² with a length of approx. 3.5 km. Rammu is up to 3.4 m above sea level. Like most of the islands in the area, Rammu is stony, but there are also sandy areas in places. Rammu is particularly known for numerous boulders .
history
There is no precise information about the first settlement of the island. In 1570 the island was mentioned as holm Ramboe . It was probably inhabited by ethnic Swedes from the beginning of the 18th century. Three mills were later listed on Rammu. The people lived from fishing, but also from smuggling. A school had been operating on Rammu since 1920. In 1950 the approximately 100 remaining inhabitants were driven from the island by the Soviet occupying forces. Of the 22 homesteads on the island's south beach, only ruins remain today. There are still two lighthouses on the island that are out of order today.
