Ranachan Hillfort

Ranachan Hillfort

Ranachan Hillfort is a former walled facility on the Kintyre peninsula in Argyll and Bute, Scotland . It is northeast of Kilchenzie and 800 m east of the Banageck farm.

The once impressive wall of the small oval fortification, with internal dimensions of 35 × 24 m, which overlooks Machrihanish Bay 212 m high, is only low. However, the outline at the top of the hill has been preserved and there are several wall areas on the south side that are still more than 1.2 m high. Reinforcements of the wall, which is between 2.7 and 3.7 m thick, can be seen in the northeast and south. The fort was reinforced on its eastern flank with additional ramparts, but their temporal relation to the construction of the Hillfort is unclear. The 2.7 by 2.0 m wide access is in the west and a smaller one in the north. The comparison with other hillforts in this region and in time ( Dun Kildonan ) shows that the hillfort was an important center of the kingdom of Dalriada in the first millennium AD.
