Randall Lynn Stephenson, Jr. (born April 22, 1960 in Oklahoma City , USA ) is the CEO of the American company AT&T .

Career

Stephenson holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Central Oklahoma and an MBA from the University of Oklahoma . He began his professional career in 1982 when he joined Southwestern Bell Telephone , one of the telephone providers that AT&T had spun off as part of antitrust proceedings . He then held various management positions in finance in the late 1980s and early 1990s . In July 2001 he became CFO at SBC Communications , where he managed to reduce the annual losses of nearly 30 billion dollars by 2004 to an almost balanced balance sheet. In 2003 and 2004 he was CEO of 2007 by AT & T Wireless acquired mobile phone company Cingular Wireless. From April 2004 he was Chief Operating Officer at SBC. Even after the takeover of SBC by AT&T, he remained COO, responsible for the mobile communications business. In 2007 he replaced Edward Whitacre as CEO at AT&T.

In December 2004, George W. Bush announced that he would appoint Stephenson to the National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee .

In 2017, Stephenson was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
