Rane Serato Scratch Live ( SL or SSL ) was a DJ program that was developed as a so-called vinyl emulator and part of a digital vinyl system developed by the companies Rane Corporation (hardware) and Serato Audio Research (software). A control signal in the form of an analog audio signal is sent from a record or CD to the software. This implements the code to control various audio and video signals. A change in the signal caused by a forward or backward movement of the record or CD (e.g. by scratching ) has a 1: 1 effect on the output of the audio signal. In addition, the software includes functions such as loop , cue points, etc. The audio signal generated via the control signal is sent from the computer via the USB port to the Rane audio interfaces and output from them as an analog signal. The hardware is a sound card and dongle for the software at the same time. The product was discontinued in 2013 and replaced by Serato DJ Pro .

Serato Scratch Live

You can download Scratch Live from the official homepage even before you have the necessary hardware. This gives you the opportunity to organize your music and configure the software. However, the user interface only has one player so that you can preview music directly in the software and B. Set CUE points or loops. Supported formats

With the official extension Video-SL (VSL) the output of video files is also possible. The plug-in uses QuickTime and can therefore largely use all formats supported by QuickTime. Rane has also released a mixer called TTM 57SL, which combines the legendary TTM 56 with Scratch LIVE. The mixer has the necessary hardware directly integrated and enables easy control of the software with various potentiometers and buttons. In September 2012, Serato released a new version of the extension called Serato Video (SV). On the one hand, the performance of the extension was improved and the scope of effects and operating options increased. Video-SL users had the option of converting their license free of charge in order to access the new Serato Video functions.

USB audio interface

The control signal from the record player or CD player is fed to the computer via a USB audio interface . The signals from the computer are also converted back into an audio signal here so that they can be passed on to the mixer . Audio interfaces compatible with Serato Scratch Live are the SL1, SL2, SL3 and SL4 manufactured by Rane, which can be built into any existing setup. Furthermore, the sound mixers from Rane (Sixty Eight, Sixty Two, Sixty One and TTM 57SL), in which an audio interface is already installed, are compatible with Serato Scratch Live. No additional audio interface is required for this.

With the thru mode of the audio interface, it is possible to pass on the analog audio signal from the records or CDs directly to the sound mixer. The contents of existing sound carriers can continue to be used.

Noisemap records and CDs

The records and CDs contain a special code, the Serato Noisemap. Unlike comparable products, this is not a time code, but an LFSR- based pseudo-random code of maximum length, which is used to determine the position. For this purpose, the audio signal is tapped acoustically, similar to a fax or data cassette, and interpreted as a data stream.
