Ranking list for the allocation of starting places at orienteering world championships
Starting in 2014, the starting positions at the World Orienteering Championships will be allocated using a ranking list calculated by the International Orienteering Association ( IOF ).
The results of the middle and long distance as well as the relay results of the last two world championships are included in the ranking list. The best eight nations get three, the following 14 nations get two and all others get one starting place each. Separate ranking lists are set up for women and men.
background
With the introduction of a sprint relay, the IOF would like to increase the number of medal decisions at world championships. However, since they do not want to increase the number of races, the world association is planning to abolish the qualification runs over medium and long distance. From now on, the starting places are to be allocated via the ranking list.
Weaker nations in particular see themselves being treated unfairly in this way, and can often only field one starter per discipline. There is no possibility of reaching the final with strong performances in a preceding qualification.
The sprint is excluded from the regulation. In the future, the participating nations will be able to send three starters here, who can then reach the final via a qualifying race as before.
calculation
For the calculation, the results on the middle and long distance as well as in the relay of the last two world championships are included.
In individual races , the points are awarded as follows:
space | Points |
---|---|
1 | 120 |
2 | 100 |
3 | 80 |
4-6 | 70-65-60 |
7-10 | 57-55-53-51 |
11-60 | 50-49 -...- 2-1 |
Points are awarded in relay races according to the following scheme:
space | Points |
---|---|
1 | 240 |
2 | 160 |
3 | 130 |
4th | 114 |
5 | 106 |
6-30 | 100-96 -...- 8-4 |
The nations are divided into divisions from 1 to 3. After each World Cup, the worst country in Division 1 is relegated to Division 2. In return, the best country in Division 2 moves up to Division 1. Between division 2 and 3 there are two relegation and promotion positions. The points in the direct comparison between promoters and relegators are not taken into account.
If a country in a lower division has a higher score than a country in a higher division, these countries will also swap divisions.
The defending champions as well as the continental champions of the respective discipline receive fixed starting places. The host nation also automatically receives three starting places. In 2014 it will be Italy.
