Ranguana Caye (German: " Iguana - reef island " in the local dialect) is a small private island off the coast of Belize , about 16 km east of Dangriga .

The island lies on the outer edge of the Belize Barrier Reef and is in the South Water Caye Marine Reserve in the Stann Creek District . The island is only 0.8 hectares (2 acres) in size, with a jetty and anchorages for visitors. Day tours are offered by Belize Ocean Club , a Maya Beach Village hotel near Placencia and owned by Muy'Ono Properties . Ranguana Caye has three rustic huts for overnight guests, Bully's Beach Bar , a grill and composting toilets.

The sanctuary is famous for its biodiversity, and snorkeling and fishing are popular leisure activities.
history
A legend about the history of the island says that it was originally called Cayo Renegado in the 17th century because it was the base of the renegade Diego el Mulato .
