Raphael Cotoner
Raphael Cotoner i d'Olesa (also Rafael or Raffaele , * 1601 ; † October 20, 1663 ) was the 60th Grand Master of the Order of Malta .
He belonged to the Aragonese tongue of the order. He served as Grand Master from June 6, 1660 until his death in 1663.
Raphael Cotoner was a prudent and religious person. He commissioned the famous painter Mattia Preti to paint the vault of the Ordenskirche St. Johann, today's St. John's Co-Cathedral in Valletta . However, Raphael did not live to see the completion of the remarkable pictures he created in the monastic church within 13 years.
Like his brother and successor Nicolas Cotoner , Raphael was a great builder and her coat of arms is carved into most of the facades of the palaces, churches and fortresses in Valletta and other parts of the island. However, the artistic embellishment of the St. Johann church remains its greatest contribution. It was a period of prosperity in the islands, but their building mania and flamboyant tastes put a strain on the treasury.
