Rappa Castle ( Irish Caisleán na Ropaí ) is the ruin of a country house in Ballina in Ireland's County Mayo .

history

Rappa Castle belonged to the Bourke family and was assigned to a soldier from Cromwell's army named Crofton after the reconquest of Ireland . In the 17th century, William Knox from Castlerea (* 1630) married a Crofton daughter from Rappa Castle. So the country house came into the Knox family, who owned it until the 1920s.

Francis Knox , 3rd son of Francis Knox of Moyne Monastery and his wife, Dorothy Annesley , was born in 1726 and in 1761 married Mary Gore of Belleek , heiress of Rappa Castle. He settled there and became High Sheriff of Mayo . In 1818 the country house fell to his son Annesley Gore Knox (1768–1839), who was High Sheriff of Mayo in 1825 and had eight sons. The closest resident was his eldest son, also Annesley (1798–1878) and High Sheriff of Mayo in 1829. Three of his sons survived him; Annesley Arthur inherited the property. He was High Sheriff of Mayo in 1884 .

The Knox family left the mansion after the Irish War of Independence and it came into the possession of William Gillespie . The Gillespie family lived there with their 13 children until the cost of maintenance got too high. Then William Gillespie had a new house built in front of the old country house, where the family lived until 2001. The ruins of the country house are behind the new house.

The old country house is listed as a protected building.
