Kinlough Castle ( Irish Casileán Chionn Locha ) is the ruin of a tower house on the west bank of the Black River , 3.2 km southwest of the village of Shrule , the Irish County Mayo . It is considered a national monument .
history
The Tower House is said to originally date from the 13th century. In 1574 Sir John FitzOliver Burke had two stories added and fitted with open chimneys in the corners.
The castle was mortgaged to the Blakes in 1629 and leased to John Darcy in 1668 .
The current Tower House was built in the 16th century. It is referred to as "McWilliam House" on a map from 1584. The "McWilliam Eighter", then Sir John FitzOliver Burke , lived there in 1574. In 1618 Sir Richard FitzOliver Burke was the tenant and his son, Walter , pawned it in 1628 to Sir Valentine Blake of Menlough . Sir Thomas Blake leased it to John Darcy in 1668 and Pierce Joyce bought the land in 1852.
