Rashaida

The Rashaida are a nomadic people who live in Eritrea and have populated the coastal strip from the Egyptian asch-Schalatin via the Gebel-Elba National Park to Sudan . Their ancestors immigrated from the Arabian Peninsula in the 19th century . You speak Arabic and profess Islam .

It is the custom of the Rashaida women to cover their faces with a veil from the age of five .

They divide life into phases, which are made clear by changing clothing for both men and women. Girls from around the age of 5 wear a gargusch , a black, sometimes colored cloth that covers the head, shoulder and also the face below the eyes. The more mature the girls get, the more clothes are added and the longer the face veil becomes. The next section is symbolized by the “mungab” - the virgin veil , which also extends over the breast. Women of marriageable age have numbness that goes down to the ankles. Boys initially wear a cap, over which a white turban is later placed.

The Rashaida in Sudan are involved in the conflict in East Sudan .
