Shaver socket

Shaver socket unit

A shaver socket ( shaver socket unit according to EN 61558-2-5) is a socket that is galvanically separated from the low-voltage network to connect electric shavers , toothbrushes and similar devices of class II with low power in damp rooms .

Electrical Properties

Rasiersteckdoseneinheiten ( English shaver supply units ) according to EN 61558-2-5 have an isolation transformer and usually can take several two-pole sockets, different connector types ( Euro plug , British BS 4573 plug and Australian plugs ). The isolating transformer often also has a 115 V output so that US plugs can also be used. Shaver socket units must be current-limited. EN 61558-2-5 specifies a minimum rated power of 20 VA and a maximum rated power of 50 VA. EN 61558-2-5 also requires that both sockets are marked with the electric shaver connection symbol (Figure 5225 IEC 60417-1). In addition, the words “shavers only” are often used, but these are not mandatory.

In bathrooms, the shaver socket units may be used in the laying zone of protection area 2 according to VDE 0100-701.

Connector BS 4573

British BS-4573 plug

The shaver socket emerged from the BS-4573 plug (UK Shaver) , a plug in the United Kingdom and Ireland , similar to the Euro plug in continental Europe, but which is smaller than this. Its angled pins are 0.2 inches (5.08 mm) in diameter with a smaller pitch of 0.625 inches (15.88 mm) to 0.656 inches (16.66 mm) in contrast to the Euro plug (17.5 to 18 mm pitch) , 6 mm).

The British Standard BS 4573 specifies a two-pole plug for use on electric shavers. The diameter of the plug contacts are the same as for the 5 A plug defined in the outdated British Standard BS 372: 1930 Part 1. In contrast to the original BS-4573 plug, the receptacles on the contacts are isolated. The sockets for these plugs are designed exclusively for a nominal current of 200 mA.

Since the BS-4573 socket is only approved for use in dry rooms, it could not be used in typical locations for razors and is therefore only rarely used today. Sockets operated with isolating transformers and which can also be used in damp rooms have prevailed. In order to guarantee the use of both British BS-4573 plugs and Euro plugs, shaver socket units have been developed, the properties of which are specified in EN 61558-2-5.
