Connector type D

Plug type D and socket
BS 546 standard connector for 15, 5 and 2 amps.
The 15-A variant is referred to as plug-type M denotes the 5 and 2-A variant as type D .

The type D plug is an electrical connector that used to be common in Great Britain and is still used today in India and South Africa . In Libya it is the only common connector type, in numerous other countries it can be found parallel to other connectors, but there - as has already happened in Great Britain - it is being replaced by connector type G (BS 1363). The connector type D is standardized in India under the designation IA6A3.

The connector type D is built in incompatible sizes for 2 or 5 amperes, the 5 A connector is the most common.

This connector is called "5-A 3-pin" in British BS 546. A 5 A variant with two contacts is often used for electric shavers in the UK, but usually only fused with 1 A. A Euro plug also fits here .

construction

Outer conductors , neutral conductors and protective conductors are designed as contact pins of the plug (see picture). The protective conductor creates an asymmetrical construction, so that the plug is protected against polarity reversal . However, plugs without a protective conductor are not reverse polarity protected.

Due to the continuously conductive contact pins on the surface, this connector system is not safe to touch .

The contact pins for the outer conductor and neutral conductor are 19 mm apart, have a diameter of 5.08 mm and a length of 14.8 mm. The contact pin for the protective conductor has a diameter of 7.06 mm and a length of 20.6 mm.

BS 546

BS 546, a 5 A and a 2 A socket with two contacts

One of the oldest standards is the English BS 546 standard, which first came into effect in 1950. In addition to the three-pin type D, the connector is also two-pin. These were in versions for 2, 5 and 15  A manufactured. A different round pin thickness and a different distance between the pins were selected for each type, so that the plugs of the different versions do not fit with one another, as shown in the adjacent illustration.

The 5-amp version has a pin spacing of 19 mm (¾ inch) and a pin thickness of 5.1 mm. The version for 15 A of the two-pole BS 546 has a pin spacing of 1 inch (25.4 mm) and 6.9 mm pin thickness.

BS 4573 (UK shaver)

BS-4573 plug (above) and Euro plug compared.
BS-4573: 5.1 mm pins, 16.66 mm spacing
Euro plug: 4.0 mm pins, 19.00 mm spacing (slightly converging)

A two-pole plug, which looks very similar to the Euro plug, is standardized by BS 4573 and is common in the UK for razors and electric toothbrush chargers. Its dimensions correspond to the old standard BS 372: 1930 part 1, which defined two-pin plugs of different sizes.

They are similar to those of the 5-A variant of type D of the older BS 546 , but with a smaller pin spacing. The pen thickness is 5.1 mm and the distance between the pens is 16.66 mm.

Likelihood of confusion

Due to the similar geometry, type E or F (Schuko) plugs can also be plugged into 5-ampere type D sockets. In both cases, the outer and neutral conductors would contact, but not the protective conductor, which could endanger life.

For older devices and especially for the BS 4573 razor plug, adapters are widespread in the UK and are available in many places. For the reason mentioned above, these adapters must not be used for type E or F plugs either.

distribution

The plug type D is available in Ethiopia , Afghanistan , Bangladesh , Bhutan , Botswana , Democratic Republic of the Congo , Dominica , El Salvador , French Guyana , Ghana , Grenada , Great Britain , Guadeloupe , Guyana , Hong Kong , India , Iraq , Israel , Yemen , Jordan , Lebanon , Libya , Macau , Madagascar , Maldives , Martinique , Monaco , Myanmar , Namibia , Nepal , Niger , Nigeria , Oman , Pakistan , Qatar , Zambia , Senegal , Sierra Leone , Zimbabwe , Sri Lanka , St. Kitts and Nevis , Sudan , South Africa , Tanzania , Chad and the United Arab Emirates .

Shaver sockets ( BS 4573 (UK shaver) ) are common in hotels in other countries.
