Rassemblement National pour le Développement

Rassemblement National pour le Développement (RND; German for example: "National Assembly for Development") was a political party in the state of the Comoros .

history

RND was formed on October 6, 1996 from the merger of the parties National Union for Democracy in the Comoros , Maecha Bora , Realizing Freedom's Capability , Comorian Union for Progress and Rally for Democracy and Renewal . President Mohamed Taki Abdoulkarim proposed the merger in August 1996 after his election victory.

The party won 36 of the 43 seats in the 1996 general election, which, however, was boycotted by most opposition parties.

After this clear victory, however, internal upheavals arose in the party. After the 1999 coup, one wing of the party supported the new regime of Azali Assoumani , while the other part called for the reinstatement of the interim President Tadjidine Ben Said Massounde .

In the 2002 presidential election, Mtara Maécha stood as a candidate for RND-Renewal. He got 8% of the vote and thus in fifth place. Again, Azali emerged from the election as the winner.

Before the 2004 general election, the RND joined the Camp des Îles Autonomes alliance , in opposition to Azali. Allianz won 12 of the 18 directly elected mandates and all 15 indirectly awarded mandates.
