Since 1996 Aachener Land has been the name of the double Eschweiler motorway service station on the German motorway 4 between the Eschweiler-West junction and the Aachen junction . When it was founded on June 7, 1973, it was originally called Propsteier Wald after the neighboring forest in the western part of Eschweiler with its own junction for the then military depot Camp Astrid . There is the Aachener Land Nord and Aachener Land Süd service stations . The rest stops were run by medium-sized tenants until December 28, 2009. When the tenant retired, a large corporation, Eliance Deutschland West GmbH, took over the business. This was renamed Elior Deutschland West GmbH.

The Propsteier Wald Süd rest area was built in 1977 and completely rebuilt in 1992/93, creating Germany's first Ökorasthaus. Since it reopened on April 15, 1993, the rest area has had a green roof , waterless urinals , low-temperature heating and recycled interior fittings made of wood. On January 13, 1993, a wind turbine with a nominal output of 250 kW and a mast height of 40 m was installed as a widely visible sign , which should save around 67,000 liters of heating oil per year . At the beginning of October 2009 it was dismantled and installed near Częstochowa in Poland , where it remained in operation until around the end of 2019.

The entrance area of the two-storey service area is characterized by a 465 m², partially angled glass facade. The 480 m² dining area has 284 seats. There are three disabled parking spaces, 130 car parking spaces, 10 bus parking spaces and 80 truck parking spaces behind the service station building in a "quiet sleeping location".

On July 28, 2018, then SPD chairman Andrea Nahles visited the Eschweiler rest stop as part of her summer tour, she wanted to get an idea of the working conditions of truckers.

Use as a junction

Although the Aachener Land service area is not intended as a junction, it is used as such by some drivers in the direction of St. Jöris and Merzbrück. The road connection to the motorway, which is suitable for trucks, took place in connection with the connection of the military depot of the Belgian armed forces Camp Astrid , where the Camp Astrid industrial area has meanwhile been built.

In 2013, the Federal Ministry of Transport rejected the establishment of an official junction at the level of the service area. With the existing connection points, the connection is sufficiently guaranteed and there is no need.
