Rest area Illertal Ost

The Illertal Ost service area is on the north direction of the federal motorway 7 at km 874 between the Dettingen an der Iller and Altenstadt an der Iller exits in Oberschwaben . It is the only art rest stop among the German motorway service stations .

The rest stop was initially a small, compact facility with 32 seats. A new building followed in March 1996 and was inaugurated on November 19, 1997. The new service area was built according to the leasehold model. Tank & Rast granted the operator a heritable building right, with an investor erecting the building.

Based on the Austrian art service stations, the building was designed with an unusual architecture by the Austrian architect Herbert Maierhofer . The effort for the design was almost a quarter of the total construction costs of 14 million DM. The service area, a self-service restaurant, with 212 seats in the three-story building and 120 on the terrace is a colorful fantasy building with style elements from different countries and epochs. Due to the attractiveness of the rest area for road users, it generated 5.3 million DM in net sales in the first year of operation, instead of the planned 3.6 million DM. There are five disabled parking spaces, 112 car parking spaces, 7 bus parking spaces and 41 truck parking spaces.

The curved outer walls were made of expanded clay blocks with integrated thermal insulation made of rigid polystyrene foam . The three towers were each manufactured as a complete plastic component and transported and assembled by helicopter.
