Strathmiglo Town Hall Tower

The Strathmiglo town hall tower is located in the Scottish village of Strathmiglo in the Council Area Fife . In 1973 the building was included as an individual monument in the Scottish list of monuments in the highest category A. A former additional classification as a Scheduled Monument was lifted in 2013.

history

Strathmiglo was installed as the Burgh of Barony as early as 1509 . The town hall together with the tower were built in 1734. 14 years later, Strathmiglo lost his Burgh rights. The tower bell was cast by Lester & Pack in 1766 . Originally, the local prison was on the first floor of the tower. The associated town hall was demolished in the middle of the 19th century and replaced by a new building. This has since been converted into a residential building. Until 1921 the tower clock was equipped with stone hands.

description

The town hall tower stands in a prominent position along the High Street in the center of Strathmiglo. The slightly tapering, five-story tower has a square floor plan. It is designed in the typical regional style of the 16th and 17th centuries. Natural stone details stand out from the quarry stone masonry . Simple strips of natural stone visually delimit the individual floors. On the south side, a round arched , two-winged wooden portal leads into the former prison. An angled staircase along two facades leads to another entrance on the east side of the first floor. Paired lancet windows are embedded above the tower clocks . A cantilevered parapet runs around it. The tower closes with a pointed stone helmet.
