Ratsweinkeller Gifhorn
The Ratsweinkeller , also known as the Old Town Hall , is a historic half-timbered house in Gifhorn .
history
The building was erected in 1562 as the town hall of Gifhorn . In order to impress travelers and traders on the highways leading through Gifhorn, it was decorated with magnificent wood carvings.
The office rooms and a ballroom were located on the upper floor, and the Ratskeller , sometimes also known as the Ratskrug , on the ground floor . At that time it was leased to the highest bidder for a few years. In 1843 the house was sold. Since then, the restaurant has been managed by changing owners.
In the 1970s the building was renovated and today it belongs to the city of Gifhorn again. It houses part of the city library and, together with some surrounding buildings, forms the historic center of Gifhorn's old town.
The Ratsweinkeller restaurant was closed in mid-2019, the city of Gifhorn is currently looking for a new tenant.
