The Rauðhólar is a series of craters in the gorge of the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river in northeast Iceland . They are located in the Jökulsárgljúfur National Park .

Volcanism

The fissure system belongs to the system of the central Askja volcano .

The crater series is an extension of the Rauðuborgir crater series . This follows a large fault, the so-called Sveinar Graben , up to 4 km north of Dettifoss and there (at Hafragilsfoss ) crosses the Jökulsá á fjöllum river.

The row of Rauðhólar craters swings west of the river away from the moat towards the northeast. At Hljóðaklettar it crosses the Jökulsárgljúfur gorge, which has eaten its way into the crater, so that its interior is partially exposed and you can see the top 100 m of a dyke .

Both rows of craters are around 6,000 years old.

hike

There are many marked and interesting hiking trails in the Jökulsárgljúfur National Park. One of the most fascinating hiking options, however, is the hike from the Vesturdalur car park up to the highest of the Rauðhólar, which can also be designed as a circular route through the rocks of the Hljóðarklettar.
