The Hafragilsfoss is a waterfall on the river Jökulsá Fjöllum in the northeast of Iceland .
The waterfall is located about two kilometers north (downstream) of the Dettifoss , about 30 kilometers before the river flows into the Arctic Ocean . Here the Jökulsá valley joins the Hafragil gorge coming from the west , after which the fall is named. With a height of 27 meters, Hafragilsfoss is the second highest waterfall in the river after Dettifoss. The Jökulsá gorge in the Hafragilsfoss area is called Hafragilsundirlendi ; Further down there is the smaller Réttarfoss waterfall and the Vígabjargsfoss, which was one of the most powerful on the river until the course of the river changed in 1950.
Hafragilsfoss is located in the extreme south-east of Jökulsárgljúfur National Park , which has been part of Vatnajökull National Park since 2008 . This waterfall has been under nature protection since 1996 , like the Dettifoss and the Selfoss .
On the right bank, above the waterfall, there is a lookout point near road no. 864. The left side is more difficult to reach via hiking trails that start from the parking lot west of Dettifoss (junction from road no. 862).
