Smoke powder
Smoke powder describes a pyrotechnic powder that is used to generate smoke ( smoke generator ). In Germany, the production of this powder without a permit is prohibited.
White smoke powder
White smoke powder contains a mixture of
- 40 mass% ammonium chloride ,
- 30% by mass of oxidizing agent such as potassium chlorate , otherwise there is a risk of the formation of unstable ammonium chlorate
- 30% by mass of organic natural products in powder form, such as resins, sugar.
function
The combustion of organic substances creates heat that breaks down the ammonium chloride into the gases hydrogen chloride and ammonia, a thermal dissociation . The gases rise, lose temperature and, when cooled, react back to form ammonium chloride ( Brønsted acid-base reaction ). A thick white ammonium chloride smoke is produced. The term ammonium chloride mist is incorrect because it is not about liquid droplets, but solid particles.
