The Rautenflecksalmler ( Hyphessobrycon anisitsi , Syn . : Hemigrammus caudovittatus ) occurs in Argentina , Paraguay and southeastern Brazil . The species was named after the catcher of the type specimens J. D. Anisits.

features

It has an elongated, laterally strongly flattened body and is 6 to 8 cm long. Its color is silvery, the back is brown-olive, the caudal, anal and pelvic fins are reddish or yellowish. The upper half of the iris is red. It is named after a dark, rhombic spot on the base of the tail. Males are slimmer and have a stronger fin color, the females are plump, especially during the breeding season.

Way of life

The Rautenflecksalmler is a schooling fish. It feeds on worms, crustaceans, insects and plant matter. The very productive females give up up to 1000 eggs during spawning. The fry hatch after 24 to 48 hours, depending on the temperature, and swim free after another 4 to 5 days.

Keeping and care

Rautenflecksalmler are an adaptable species, but they should be given plenty of free swimming space. The aquarium must be planted with hard plants such as Java fern, as tender plants will be eaten.
