Ravanica Monastery

The Monastery Ravanica is a monastery in Serbia . It is located at the foot of the Serbian Ore Mountains near the village of Senje near Ćuprija .

Ravanica is a foundation of Prince Lazar Hrebeljanović , who died in the battle on the Blackbird Field in 1389 and whose bones were subsequently buried in this monastery. Ravanica was built between 1375 and 1377.

In the style of the Morava school , the exterior of the monastery is more reminiscent of a fortress. The entire monastery complex consisted of a church, various farm buildings, monks' cells, hospital and a refectory and was enclosed by a fortification wall with seven towers, of which parts of the northern wall and three towers still exist today.

The church was dedicated to the Ascension of Christ . It has the shape of an orthodox cross with five domes combined with three conches . Four free-standing supports support the central dome. On the east side there is a tripartite apse.
