Raynor Taylor

Raynor Taylor (* 1747 in London , † August 17, 1825 in Philadelphia ) was an English composer, organist and music teacher.

Taylor attended King's Singing School and was a member of the Chapel Royal choir , with whom he performed at Handel's funeral in 1759 . He later became an organist in Chelmsford, where he also worked as a music teacher from 1765 to 1792. He also worked as a composer, singer and musical director in Marylebone Gardens and at Sadler's Wells Theater . His Burletta Buxom Joan premiered at the Haymarket Theater in 1778 .

In 1792 he emigrated to the USA. There he lived in Philadelphia from 1793, where he was organist at St. Peter's Church from 1793 to 1813 . At the opening of the Philadelphia Vauxhall Gerdens in 1814, he performed his own organ concert. He has composed plays and operas including The Iron-Chest and The Shipwreck'd Mariner Preserved for the Chestnut Street Theater . Together with its director, his former student Alexander Reinagle , he composed Monody - on the occasion of the death of George Washington in 1799 - and Pizarro . In 1797 he published a piano school with Benjamin Carr . In 1820 he was one of the founders of the Musical Fund Society . Taylor is considered one of the first major composers in the USA.
