The Real Instituto Elcano (RIE, officially Real Instituto Elcano de Estudios Internacionales y Estratécos ) is a Spanish think tank .

The Institute was founded on December 2, 2001 under the honorary chairmanship of Felipe of Spain , Prince of Asturias , and is based in Madrid . It is an academic think tank and is independent of government and business associations . It has been headed by lawyer Gustavo Suárez Pertierra since 2010 .

Areas of activity are Spain's relations with the European Union , Latin America , the Arab world , the United States and Sub-Saharan Africa .

The institute sees itself as a "forum for analysis and debate" also on questions of defense and international terrorism , but also on the country's image in the world. Its budget is around 4 million euros (2010); A quarter of this is tax revenue, the rest corporate money.

It was named after the Spanish circumnavigator Juan Sebastián Elcano .
