Reality Check is a song by German rapper Fler , which was released on May 27, 2016 on his probation past EP on the independent label Masculin . The song is a disstrack against an indefinite “you”, which Fler accuses of being too low in authenticity . Even if he is not explicitly mentioned in the text, it can be clearly heard that the indefinite "you" is the rapper Kollegah , with whom Fler had disputes for years.

This song was also probably together with an interview by Fler for the magazine Backspin , which is relatively well known in the German hip-hop scene , the trigger for the 18-minute Disstrack Fanpost 2 published by Kollegah , which was released on September 2, 2016 of Fler's album Vibe , was released.

style

In contrast to various other disstracks, Reality Check lives more from the fact that the protagonist treats his opponent in a comparatively harmless way on a verbal level, but still reproaches him. A suitable comparison would be a father who "plucks a chicken" with his son. This gave this song a certain "rarity value".

content

Introducing the refrain "Why are you not yourself?", With which Fler accuses the opponent of lacking authenticity, Fler titled him as "YouTuber who muckles". Then he makes it clear that Fler's music is not a “crossword puzzle rap” (well thought-out, lyrical texts). According to him, this style is long out of date. Then he responds to a large number of bodyguards for his opponent. He challenges him to bring another “pimp tape” on the market, which is the clearest reference to the rapper Kollegah in the entire text. In addition, Fler goes into an interview by Heckmeck.tv with the former, real “pimp” Bernd Termer, who is not very impressed, and is even more amused by Kollegah. Then at the end of the first verse, Fler underlines his strong authenticity. At the beginning of the second stanza, Fler emphasizes that his opponent has "pulled himself up" on him with regard to his career path and accuses him of frequent use of the image editing app Photoshop . Towards the end of the song, Fler confirms once again that his opponent definitely does not have the title of the German "King of Rap", which Kollegah tried several times to give himself. For Fler and most German rap consumers, this title is only due to Kool Savas .

marketing

Fler announced in his anti-Kollegah YouTube video blog "Felix Exposed" that a Disstrack could be published in the near future. In addition, before the EP was released, he published short audio samples of the songs on it - including Reality Check . In the later published interview with the editor Niko of the Backspin magazine, which was titled as an "epic interview" and generated a lot of attention and awareness in the German hip-hop scene, Fler went into greater detail on the importance of authenticity in the rap genre and even verbally attacked the editor when he made an incorrect statement for Fler about Kollegah.

reception

The rapper Kollegah replied on September 2, 2016 with the Disstrack Fanpost 2 , which was not available on the Internet for long.

Alexander Austel from laut.de said that in the song Fler tried "instead of limiting himself to swearword drive-bys" to vilify his colleague "with arrogance and contempt". His song asks the "nasal question:" Why aren't you yourself? "".

Louis Richter from rap.de described Reality Check as the most obvious, but nevertheless most eagerly awaited song on the EP, which also acts as a "prime example" for the entire EP.
