RED had four seats in the Constituent Assembly , but was unable to move into the 2009 National Assembly .

history

The party was founded in 2005 as an election platform for León Roldós for the 2006 presidential election. Roldós has been a well-known left-wing politician in Ecuador since the 1980s, whose brother Jaime Roldós was president of the country from 1979 until his death in 1981. Leon Roldós was in 1992 (for the Socialist Party of Ecuador ) and 2002 (for the original of Freddy Ehlers , founded Movimiento Ciudadano Nuevo País been) presidential candidate. In 2002 Roldós was initially a candidate for the social democratic party Izquierda Democrática(ID) or as a common candidate of the latter with the Socialist Party, to which Roldós belonged, in talks. Izquierda Democrática had finally decided in favor of its chairman Rodrigo Borja and against Roldós, which is why this sought an independent candidacy and ultimately received more votes than Borja. Roldós made a name for himself in the election campaign as an independent figure of renewal and transparency and referred to his work as rector of the Guayaquil State University . He is still the most important representative of socialist and social democratic tendencies in the city of Guayaquil, which has been dominated by the conservative Partido Social Cristiano . After Rafael Correa's election victory in 2006, his party worked to a large extent with his politically similarly oriented Movimiento PAÍS , although Roldós showed himself to be a critic of Correa or the ruling faction in the Constituent Assembly on individual points.
