Federico "Freddy" Ehlers Zurita (born November 30, 1945 in Quito ) is an Ecuadorian journalist and politician. He was the country's tourism minister from May 2010 to June 2013 and has been State Secretary for Good Living since June 2013.

Working life

As a journalist, Ehlers has contributed to thousands of documentaries over the course of thirty years. From 1980 to 1988 he was program director on Andean television. In 1990 he started producing the series La Televisión on environmental issues; According to the audience, this show was the most successful program in the journalism and opinion category in Ecuador from 1990 to 2006.

Political career

In the national presidential elections of 1996 and 1998, he ran for the office of Ecuadorian President, but had no chance against the later incumbents Abdalá Bucaram (1996) and Jamil Mahuad (1998).

On October 20, 2002 Ehlers was elected to the Andean parliament as representative of the Movimiento Cívico Nuevo País for Ecuador , advisory and control body of the Andean community CAN. During his tenure, which ended in 2006, he was Vice President there. On January 18, 2007, Ehlers was elected Secretary General of the Andean Community for five years, replacing the Colombian Alfredo Fuentes Hernández . On April 20, 2010, he submitted his resignation from this office in order to return to Ecuadorian politics. On May 10, 2010, he was appointed Minister of Tourism by President Rafael Correa .

Awards

The United Nations Environment Program UNEP awarded him the " Global 500 Award " in 1993 for his efforts to deepen the environmental awareness of Ecuadorians.
