Redcliff (Zimbabwe)

Redcliff , sometimes also Redcliffe, with 35,929 inhabitants (2012 census) is the much smaller neighboring town of Kwekwe in the Midlands province and is 1,306 meters above sea level on the Great Dyke in Zimbabwe . The deposits of iron ore here are large. It is a city of the iron and steel industry, the second largest production facility in Black Africa. ZISCO (Zimbabwe Iron and Steel Company) and BIMCO (Buchwa Iron Mining Company) are the two largest employers in the city.

Steel production fell from 450,000 t in 2000 to 271,812 t in 2002 - with a further downward trend. Unemployment is extremely high and ZISCO is about to end its subsidies. The infrastructure no longer works in parts. The military patrols the densely populated suburbs . In the meantime, the government has contacted China and Germany to get production under control again.
