A report organ (also a report journal ) reports on papers from a specific subject. Mostly abstracts are also published from dependent literature (essays) that are editorially or by freelance workers. Some units publish reviews and general bibliographies.

The Chemisches Zentralblatt , which was founded in Leipzig in 1830 as Pharmaceutisches Zentralblatt and discontinued in 1969, is considered to be the world's oldest departmental organ . The Chemistry Information Center has been working on digitizing the 140 annual volumes since 2006. Another departmental organ founded in the 19th century (1868) was the yearbook on the progress of mathematics , which was discontinued in 1942 .

The tasks of departmental bodies were later also taken over by departmental services , which create the relevant information on customer-specific requirements. Alert services are a well-known form .
