The Chemisches Zentralblatt is the oldest paper in the field of chemistry and is thematically similar to the English-language Chemical Abstracts .

The Chemisches Zentralblatt was founded on January 14, 1830 by the publisher Leopold Voss and the physicist and nature philosopher Gustav Theodor Fechner . It was last edited by Heinrich Bertsch and Wilhelm Klemm , it appeared since January 14, 1830 (at that time under the name Pharmaceutisches Central-Blatt ) and ceased its publication in 1969. Register volumes were published until 1972.

In the 140-year history, advances in chemistry and chemical technology have been reported on a total of around 650,000 pages and access to the primary literature recorded is systematically made accessible with around 180,000 pages of registers (author, subject, formula, patent, and citation registers) . It was last published by Akademie-Verlag (Berlin) and Verlag Chemie (Weinheim / Bergstrasse) on behalf of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin, the Chemical Society of the German Democratic Republic ( GDR ), the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen and the Society of German Chemist (GDCh). In brief summaries, it gave weekly reports on publications from domestic and foreign specialist journals, as well as books and patent literature. The excerpts were assigned to specialist groups.

The decline of the traditional department was u. a. a consequence of the Second World War. English-language magazines reached Germany only to a limited extent during the war. After the end of the war in 1945, the backlog could only be reduced slowly, which was made more difficult by the division of Germany and thus the Zentralblatt editorial team ( East and West ). In addition, the German language steadily lost its importance in international chemistry.

Today's leading American organ, Chemical Abstracts, does not begin until 1907. Therefore, the often more detailed presentations in older volumes of the Chemisches Zentralblatt are still useful for research, e. B. for Russian work. The content of current patents was also analyzed.

The chemical central sheet has now been completely digitized and made available as a full-text searchable version. Based on this, an Internet-based database was also developed, in which the contents of the Chemisches Zentralblatt can be searched and displayed using chemical structure searches.
