The direction concept is a concept for the implementation of a play in the theater , opera , radio or television . All implications from the current situation, historical reference, content preferences of those involved, etc. can be included.

The directing concept emerges less as an 'ingenious act' than as the result of a - partly systematic - working through of the work to be staged. Other trades, such as dramaturges , stage designers , costume designers and lighting designers , are often involved in the development .

The Meiningeners are the first to speak of a directing concept in today's sense . Duke Georg II., Who completely reformed the content of his court theater and thus became a pioneer of modern directing and acting, brought all the scenic means together in his directing concepts. This included the stage design, which was supposed to give the scene the perfect illusion, as well as various lighting moods, spatial effects, atmosphere and music. Together with the actors' play, which is as realistic and psychologically credible as possible, an artistic oeuvre was to emerge that was able to put the viewer in a complete illusion. This path was continued and perfected in particular by the director Max Reinhardt .

Even Bertolt Brecht was famous for his sophisticated directing concepts. Together with a team of employees, Brecht developed detailed preparatory work for his productions. Solutions were theoretically thought out, discussed and played through on the basis of a model, right down to the scenic details, before they were rehearsed with the actors. This preparatory work often found its way into Brecht's "model books", in which the director laid down his theatrical work in detail and not infrequently raised it as the standard for future productions.

Whether directing concepts are set down in writing or verbally communicated to the ensemble by the director is mostly at the discretion of the director and his team today. In the theater, the director's concept is usually presented in the so-called conception or reading sample. At this rehearsal, in which not only the actors but also all trades take part, the director explains his intentions for the production. The stage and costume designers also present their designs. The actors often also receive material developed by the dramaturge, in which the direction concept is clarified and enriched with information on the historical background and the history of the work as well as explanations of the individual characters and current associative material.
