Regional Reception Center

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Regional Reception Center is a detention facility for male prisoners of the high security level (maximum) in the southwest of the Canadian province of Québec . Since a merger, the Special Handling Unit (SHU, nickname "The Shu") has also been part of the institution, a department of the highest security level ( Supermax ) . It is operated by Correctional Service Canada (CSC).

The total capacity is approximately 370 inmates, more than 280 in the reception center and 90 in the SHU. Prison staff who are in contact with the prisoners are generally only equipped with pepper spray in order to prevent inmates from arming themselves dangerously. The star-shaped building with 6 wings is surrounded by three fences, in the vicinity of which there are again only agricultural areas.

Several criminals, some of whom are internationally known, were currently or previously imprisoned in the facility (especially the SHU), including Clifford Robert Olson , Luka Rocco Magnotta , Allan Legere , Maurice Boucher and, from 1993 to 2005, the serial killer Karla Homolka .
