El País is a Spanish-language, Uruguayan , nationally distributed daily newspaper from Montevideo .

The political newspaper , originally related to the Partido Nacional , which appeared for the first time on September 14, 1918, developed into a more general newspaper with a conservative to liberal orientation. It is one of the most important news publications in the country. Its founders and editors were Leonel Aguirre , Eduardo Rodríguez Larreta and Washington Beltrán Barbat . The current managing director is Guillermo Scheck . Over the course of its more than 90-year history, the newspaper's authors have included important journalists such as Manuel Flores Mora and Francisco Espínola , the humorist Julio Suárez “Peloduro” and theater critics such as Homero Alsina Thevenet , Emir Rodríguez Monegal and Antonio Larreta . Enrique Beltrán Mullin , Martín Aguirre Gomensoro and Julia Rodríguez Larreta headed the editorial team in 2010. An internet edition of the newspaper has been published since 1996.
