Regolamento Internazionale Veicoli

The Regolamento Internazionale Veicoli (RIV) or Regolamento Internazionale dei Veicoli is part of the legal provisions for international rail traffic and is an agreement between European railroad companies first concluded in 1922 on internationally operational freight wagons . It was replaced on July 1, 2006 by the General Contract for the Use of Freight Cars (AVV). However, the RIV symbol still stands for goods wagons that can be used internationally.

Only the loading instructions in Appendix II have remained in force until revoked. The rest was taken over into the AVV and replaced or canceled.

The RIV stipulated which technical conditions a car must meet in order to be allowed to be used internationally. Wagons that met these conditions bore the RIV symbol and were allowed to run on all RIV railways without special approval. The first two numbers in the 12-digit car number indicated whether it was a RIV car.

Annotation; The number ranges in brackets were reserved for the common freight wagon fleet, which - if they were built accordingly - could also bear the RIV mark, but did not have to. Today the 27 or 37 is in use again in Germany and occupied by the former AAE wagons (as the UIC railway administration, this formerly had the UIC code 68), which had to be integrated into 80 D- with the introduction of the country code . These all bear the RIV logo.

If they had a “special grid”, wagons without the RIV sign could run in the relevant countries. If a wagon was neither suitable for RIV nor had a special grid for the corresponding foreign railway administration, it had to run as an extraordinary shipment .
