Regolamento Internazionale delle Carrozze

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Regolamento Internazionale delle Carrozze ( RIC for short, German: Agreement on the exchange and use of passenger coaches in international traffic ) is part of the legal provisions for international rail traffic and is anagreement concluded in1922 between European railways on internationally operational passenger coaches . The RIC waslooked afterby the SBB until 1982,and since then by the International Union of Railways (UIC). Today 42 railway companies from Europe take part in the RIC. However, this does not apply to the British Isles or to the Russian broad gauge network(including Finland). Railways in these countries can still have RIC-compatible wagons.

The RIC specifies which technical conditions a railroad car must meet in order to be able to operate internationally. Wagons that meet these conditions bear the RIC symbol and may run on all RIC railways without special approval.

RIC grid

The RIC grid also specifies the permissible speed, the permissible voltages and the maximum current strength of the train busbar . An anchor symbol indicates that rail ferries are permitted to be used. If country codes are indicated in the RIC grid, the car is only permitted for the countries indicated.

The car number of a RIC car begins with 51, 52, 53, 61, 62, 63, 71 or 73. Car number 71 was only active from 1971 to 1995 and identified the international sleeping car pool, also known as the TEN pool. This pool was only active in Western Europe and only included sleeping cars from CIWL and DSG .

Grid of a car without RIC

There are also cars that can be used internationally without a RIC. These require a special agreement from the railway companies on whose networks they are allowed to operate. A RIC grid can also be written on such wagons, but with a cross instead of the letters RIC and with the abbreviations of the countries for which the wagon is approved (apart from its home railway administration).
