Exceptional shipment

An extraordinary shipment is the possibility of transporting something that causes operational and / or technical problems.

A shipment is considered to be exceptional if it causes particular difficulties due to its external dimensions, weight or condition with regard to the railway systems or wagons of one of the railways involved in the transport and can therefore only be approved under special technical or operational conditions.

It can be:

  • Weight per meter and / or axle load of the stretch to be driven on is exceeded.
  • The shipment exceeds the loading dimension of a route to be traveled.
  • Rigid cargo loaded on multiple wagons.
  • Flexible loads that are longer than 36 m (only for certain railways).
  • Inadequately secured cargoes, including cargoes that require particularly careful handling (ban on drainage and push-off).
  • Wagons that travel as cargo on their own wheels through a country where there is no registration (no RIV - RIC mark).
  • Wagons with more than 8 axles when they are loaded.
  • Wagons that use rail ferries but do not meet all the requirements.
  • Load that has to be reloaded and weighs more than 25 t or is loaded on special wagons.

Exceptional shipments cannot be accepted under normal conditions and must therefore be clarified beforehand.

The international definition can be found in the UIC Loading Guidelines, Volume 1, Chapter 7.

These shipments are often on the move as special trains on weekends and can cause a sensation if they reach certain dimensions. Power transformers weighing over 250 t are transported with 24- to 36-axle special freight wagons. An unusual shipment can also travel on a normal freight train if the restrictions only apply in shunting systems or do not disrupt operations - for example, if a bridge is only allowed to be driven on at reduced speed.
