Regulatory genes

As a regulatory gene in which is genetics a gene denotes that that gene expression controls. These include genes for activators or for repressors . In contrast to regulatory genes, structural genes code for enzymes and structural proteins .

A regulatory gene codes either for an active repressor, which only becomes inactive in the presence of a certain substrate ( inducer ), such as e.g. B. the lactose operon , or it codes for an inactive repressor, which only becomes active in the presence of a certain product , such as. B. the tryptophan operon . An example of an activator is the catabolite activator protein in catabolite repression .
