Imperial Flanders

Rich Flanders is the name for that part of the county of Flanders , which is within the boundaries of the Holy Roman Empire , that is east of the Scheldt , was, and where the German king or emperor of the feudal lord was. Imperial Flanders came into being during the 11th century when the Counts of Flanders extended their power to this part of the empire.

The rest of Flanders, the area west of the Scheldt, was under the King of France and was called Crown Flanders .
