The Reich Center for Earthquake Research was a research facility for seismology in Jena . In 1900 a seismological station was put into operation in the basement of the physical institute in Jena . Since then, seismographs have been developed in Jena . On September 4th, 1923 the institute was founded as the "Reich Center for Earthquake Research with its headquarters in Jena". After the Second World War on October 1, 1945, the Reich headquarters was attached to the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena . In October 1946, it was subordinated to the Academy of Sciences of the GDR and renamed the Central Institute for Earthquake Research . In 1968 the institute was incorporated into the Central Institute for Earth Physics . In October 1992 the Institute for Geosciences of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena was re-established at the Jena site.
