Row closure (plant)

Sugar beet field shortly before the row closes

Row closure refers to a point in time at which the cultivated plants from the neighboring rows cover the space in between.

The following definition was developed for row cropping sugar beets:

The row closes in the calendar week in which leaves of more than 90% of the plants in adjacent rows touch or overlap.

The row closure for beets is in a phase with high leaf growth, usually the row closure for beets in Germany takes place in mid-June.

consequences

From the end of the row, potatoes show a relatively strong weed-suppressing effect.

The time of the series connection is important for a wide range of measures.

  • The row closure is the point in time when the beets should be fertilized with boron for the first time .
  • The high leaf mass leads to a change in the microclimate : The temperatures in the stand are slightly lower and the air humidity is slightly higher. Thus, the appearance of Cercospora beticola is favored from the end of the row .
  • Weeds can be combated mechanically and chemically without problems up to the end of the row. Later, the crop plants are damaged. Splash shadows occur during plant protection : the cultivated plants completely or partially cover the weeds so that they cannot be combated. The favorable microclimate then leads to late weed growth .
  • Shortly before the row closes, potatoes usually have the first infections with late blight and tuber rot . The start of spraying with late blight fungicides should therefore fall within this period.
